Class is Canceled!

Dear Students,
Today's "class" has been canceled!  I'm out-of-comission for a few days, thanks to a looming book-chapter deadline plus taking care of a sick lil' pup.  Noelle (aka "Squirt") was suspended from doggie daycare yesterday, because of her tummy troubles.  Poor girl.  I was sent to the principal's office once in elementary school, so I know this can be traumatizing!
Awww Squirt, it's a good thing you're so darn cute!!
Having to be stay-at-home puppy parents for the next week will be quite the bummer, but Michael and I are hopeful that she'll be feeling better soon with help from a bland diet (aka, home-cooked food), a round of tummy meds and some pro-biotics.

Any tummy-fixing tips from those who have dealt with anything like this before?  (FYI, she is negative for parasites, thank goodness!)

  1. Oh no! I hope your dog gets better soon. My dog has had all kinds of tummy issues. Many nights I've had to sleep on the couch to make sure he is cleaned up after frequent potty breaks. I feel your pain.

Are they eating? If yes, I recommend plain white rice mixed with canned pumpkin until they are better. If that doesn't work, you can give them kaopectate or pepto along with the rice. My dog will not eat kaopectate so we have to force feed it if necessary. =( If you want supplements, fortiflora seems to help: http://www.purinaveterinarydiets.com/Product/FortiFloraCanineNutritionalSupplements.aspx. I've started supplementing his food daily with vegetables (carrots and green beans). It seems to work just as well as fortiflora and bags of carrots are very cost effective.

Whenever my dog has extended tummy trouble, he always gets irritated bum. Blood can happen, but not a worry unless blood inside stool. Overshare? KY Jelly works great. I know it sounds weird, but it helps.

If they dont' want to eat, you should prob take their temp. If it is normal, wait for a day or two to see if they get it back. If it is not, it is probably time for the vet.

Hopefully it isn't giardia. Good luck!!!!!

    1. Thank you so much for this advice! She tested negative for Giardia (twice, actually), so our theory is that she has a bacterial imbalance in her gut. FortiFlora has been recommended to us a few times now, so we've ordered a box from Amazon, and hope it helps! Our vet said to wait until she is off of her current meds before starting it, since an anti-biotic and pro-biotic would kind of cancel each other out!

    2. Also, we've been feeding her white rice, ground turkey, and either a bit of plain yogurt or cottage cheese. We are anxious to be back on kibble, since this takes a lot of effort and room in our fridge!

    1. Good! This is what we were recommended, so I'm glad to hear others have had success!

  3. Fortiflora is pretty helpful (at least with my cat), but you might have to hide it in her food if she is a picky eater (my cat was VERY picky and she was not fond of it).

Cooked rice and pumpkin should also help solidify things. Good luck!

  4. Canned pumpkin is FABULOUS! Add a tablespoon or so to whatever you are feeding, that will firm things up, and it also works on constipation I hear. (We've only used it for the other.) Our new puppy had Giardia and even before it was diagnosed this helped her SO much, plus they usually like the taste. If not it's okay to add a little cinnamon. But, mixed in with the rice and chicken, or normal kibble when pup gets back to that point is a super easy way to keep things better in the tummy. Just be warned you may have a mouth to clean up, our pup is solid white and she had some orange markings until she got used to eating something that consistency! LOL. Super healthy way to help. The fortiflora is hit or miss. Our last dog was on it when she was sick and she HATED the taste and would not eat it unless it was well disguised. Above puppy LOVES it and gobbles it up, so be prepared that this may or may not be easy. Also, our vet recommended boiled chicken breast with the rice and to boil the chicken in with the rice to give the rice more flavor. It made the rice more tempting to deceased dog. New pup is not such a fan of rice in general, but loves the chicken, or turkey. I hope some of this helps and your baby is on the mend soon. Having been through Giardia and an UTI with our 4 month old after losing our 9 year old to Leukemin in February you have all kinds of sympathy from this dog lover.

  5. PS- My vet said that Giardia can be REALLY tricky to test for and find- but we found it on the first try, so if things don't get better soon I'd try again. Did they do the swab in the office test or a stool sample? Sorry for all the questions!

    1. We've had two tests, both negative. She's being treated with antibiotics and anti-parasitics anyway, as a precaution!

  6. Good brand of dog food! When our dogs have tummy troubles the vet says rice mixed with baby food for a few days.

  7. Awww. Cute pup. Sorry to hear she is ill.

My first trip to the principal's office was in 1st grade - got into a water-spashing, boot-stomping-in-mud-puddle episode with
Willie Figueroa (can't remember what I did last week - but no problem remember this little boy's name). Mom actually had to
retrieve me from school because I was muddy and soaked. Funny thing is that I think she laughed all the way home! Loved my Mom.

Love you, too. Good luck with the chapter writing and sick puppy.
