Greetings from Barcelona: TODAY Marks One Full Year Since I've Brought Mirrors Back Into My Life...

Greetings Friends! I'm in SPAIN!!
Exactly ONE YEAR AGO I was gearing up for my "First Look Party" AKA my Body Positive Bonanza, filled with friends, family, and my favorite Bay Area positive body image organizations: About-Face, Voluptuart, and activist extraordinaire, Marilyn Wann. It was an amazing night, perfectly end to a year of smeared makeup, lessons in trust, and ample self-discovery.  Life has been pretty great since my no-mirrors project ended. I'll save the details for you to read about in the book (out May 2nd!), but suffice it to say that I'm more secure about my body,  a better friend and partner, and generally happier that I was before the project.

Anyhoo... I can't think of a cooler way to commemorate March 25th (which also happens to be my 4-year dating anniversary with Michael!), than by seeing THE FINAL HARDCOVER version of my forthcoming book, Mirror, Mirror Off the Wall (left). Oh, and it doesn't hurt that I'm currently in Barcelona, Spain, kicking off a week of vacation with my parents and siblings, Hanna and Peter. I only wish Michael could be here with us, but he's being sent to the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand for work. (Yeah, I don't feel sorry for him either!)

Okay, that's all I've got for now. More soon. I can't wait to share this week's positive body image activity with you on Wednesday. Hint: in the spirit of my stay in Europe, CHOCOLATE will be involved!

PS - Have any of you been to Spain? It's my first time here and I'd LOVE recommendations for activities, sight-seeing, and dining!

  3. Just marked this "to read" on my goodreads. :)
I'm pretty excited about it! I work with a lot of college-aged women through my church and am hoping this can help me help them love themselves for who they are.

    1. OOH - I'm so glad you're on goodreads. I JUST became a member and am learning more about the site and how to use it. Excellent! :)

Also glad to hear that you're working with young women through church. It's so important to have a safe community for "girl stuff."

  4. Do not miss going to MONTESARRAT! It is so beautiful, beyond words. It is a mountaintop monastery and the ride there is something else!! Also GAUDI's park, what architecture! My spelling may be off, but enjoy BARCELONA. It was the favorite part of our trip to Spain--

  5. Gracia was a cute neighborhood to walk around in. Go to Montejuic (sp?) park - the park area is really beautiful and the fort at the top has a stunning view of the city and the ocean! Oh and park Guell on the other side of the city is well worth your while too. I wouldn't bother with the cathedral. It's €20 to get in and the line was literally about a mile long when we were there! Perhaps better this time of year though?

Las Ramblas was very crowded when we were there but it was also fun for shopping and reataurants/bars. The outdoor market there is crazy good too - le boqueria (again sp?) Plaza Real along there was really pretty and had some good eats.

  6. Laila - I can't believe I didn't ask for more advice earlier... That said, my only condition for going on this trip with my family was that I would do ZERO planning. Seriously, Michael knows our itinerary better than I do, and he's not here!

  7. Hi Kjerstin,

I studied abroad in Barcelona and felt compelled to write and recommend Els Quatre Gats, a restaurant off of Las Ramblas that was the old stomping ground of Picasso and other great artists. It also had great food as I remember it!

    Enjoy your trip,

    Stacey

    Els Quatre Gats

The original Els Quatre Gats – it reopened in 1978 – was only open from 1897 to 1903, but enough happened to make it a place of pilgrimage for artists. Opened by Pere Romeu, a Catalan who'd worked as a waiter in a Paris cabaret and wanted to create a similarly bohemian atmosphere in Barcelona, it became the meeting place of painters Miquel Utrillo, Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol. One of their hangers-on was the teenage Picasso, whose first solo exhibition was held in Els Quatre Gats. Today it is worth a look and a drink in the Barri Gòtic, but the food is overpriced. The modernist interior has indeed been beautifully restored, but not the bohemian feel that attracted its first customers.

    1. Hi Stacey, What a great recommendation! I'm going to share this with my family and push for it when we're back in Barcelona. (Currently in Wine Country, enjoying a siesta!) Thanks especially for all of the details. We're sure to find it.

  8. Tt is just me again! I realized after I pressed "enter" that we were in Barcelona during Holy Week four years ago. We enjoyed all the very long ritual parades that took place during that time. It was my first trip abroad and a thrilling experience. Since then we
Have had 6 big trips to Mexico, Panama Canal cruise, coming home from San Francisco cross country by 1st class Amtrak, Minnesota & Oklahoma, Boston, and Alaska last August. A river boat cruise on the Elbe river from Prague to Berlin is booked for October. We love to travel and plan to continue as long as our health will allow it! Have a wonderful time with your family!!

  9. PS if you're still in Barcelona (didn't know you'd be there!), I recommend Cafe de l'Academia (tiny restaurant in a tiny alley area), Quimet & Quimet, and the Desigual store(s). Here's an awesome map of recs that Alyza made.

Therapeutic school is important to the point that taking credits to pay for it is truly a strong profession and life choice. payday loans chicago
