About

Kjerstin Gruys
I'm a sociologist, feminist scholar, body justice activist, and author of Mirror, Mirror, OFF the Wall: How I Learned to Love My Body By Not Looking at It for a Year (Avery, 2013). I'm interested in the relationship between physical appearance and social inequality, often exploring how body size, in particular, intersects with other markers of difference, such as gender, race/ethnicity, class, sexuality and age. In 2011 I challenged myself to live without mirrors.... for a year. This blog began as a way to document my no-mirrors project, and has since evolved into a place where I muse, rant and report on my colliding worlds of sociology, social psychology, contemporary feminism, body image, beauty culture, and our (my?) obsession with buying stuff. Welcome!
