Very First "Haute Hump Day" - Baby Steps in Bright Green

Here begins my first Haute Hump Day, with an outfit I see as a gentle "baby step" up, from my usual basic t-shirt & jeans + cardigan.   How did I get here?  Well, I upgraded each piece of my "fashion slump" uniform.  Walk before you run, right?

Thus, my typical basic t-shirt was replaced with a drapey, raw-edged, ruched number; my everyday bootcut jeans were swapped for a dressier pair hemmed long enough to be worn with a favorite pair of white patent-leather wedge heels (instead of my typical plain leather Birkenstocks or boat shoes).   Admittedly, I couldn't help but top it all off with one of my (many) drapey cardigans, which is no upgrade from the fashion slump, but sure felt comfortable and - I think - looked cute!  Ingrained habits are hard to break, but I'll try to push myself further next week.  I adore the green + blue combo!  Thoughts?

Oops!  I forgot to take a picture of my shoes.
These are not my feet, but these are identical to my shoes!

And finally, my go-to navy cardigan showed up for another turn around the dance floor.
So there we are, folks!  I'd love to know your thoughts.  In particular - any suggestions for how I might "upgrade my upgrade" next week?  :)

  1. How fun! I love that you're doing this! I'm with you on the green and blue combo - so bright! And those shoes might force me out of my non-consumer goal for the month ;) thanks for continuing to be a crusader for women everywhere! You're gorgeous, girl!

    1. I'm so thrilled that you love the shoes... I bought them 2-3 years ago and they've been my go-to pair of heels for almost any occasion. :D

PS - non-consumer goals are awesome. hang in there!

  2. You are so flippin adorable it kills me :) I love the outfit and your hair looks smashing. Dark denim is always a solid winner for me. But, when you're ready to crawl or walk next, add something brighter or colorful to your lower half. Pop colors in twill, denim and skirts are really fun!

Who took your photos btw? They look really good!

    1. Hey friend! Glad you like the look. I had some help with my hair - I wanted to feel extra confident for my first post-project photo-shoot. :)

Photos were taken by Lisa and Geoff Bardot of The Goodness Photography and Design. They also did my engagement and wedding photos, so you met them! We only took pictures of a few outfits for a basic portrait session, but I'm probably going to bring them back for a "fashion show" shoot so I have fun material to choose from for future Haute Hump Days!

I'm liking your suggestion for brighter colors on the lower half... I've often shied away from drawing attention to my upper-lower-half (i.e., waist/hips/thighs) since I carry weight in those spots, but I think it may be time to embrace my "coke bottle" body, and flaunt it!

  4. Very nice. Admire your courage to put yourself out there. Love the bright green. The light color on top and the dark color on the bottom (jeans) is a slenderizing look for all of us. Draws the eye to the bright color on top.

I can relate to your challenge. I live 25 miles from town, have no neighbors for a mile and work from home so "dressing it up" has to be within my comfort zone and not something radically different as the staple of my wardrobe is t-shirts and jeans. When I travel for work I wear new black jeans, that I dry clean only to keep them black, a girl cut tee or something similar and a blazer to dress it up along with dressier shoes. I can always swap out dress pants if I need to be dressier but this way I'm in casual business but comfortable. I have friends that live in 5" heels and skirts. That would never work for me. It's not who I am. If you need to be dressier, try swapping out the sweater for a lined blazer. If you buy a blazer, it should be lined, good quality fabric and well cut or it will not hang well and become shapeless. Check out upscale resale shops. I have purchased some beautiful blazers that I would not have been able to afford new at resale shops for a 1/10th of the price.

    1. Excellent advice Katie. I may need to stock up on some blazers to help push me out of my cardigan habit...

    1. I owe it all to Geoff and Lisa Bardot, of The Goodness Photography and Design. These two are amazing with color, and are fun to work with. They did the photography for my wedding, so I knew I'd feel comfortable with them. :)

  6. you are adorable. Like the blue/green combo too. I love the ruched/wrapped shirts. The tiered shirts are very forgiving of pouchy tummy days too.

  8. I like this approach to upgrading--green and blue are always a great combination. And, it's true that you almost need a pair of jeans to go with each pair of shoes in one's closet...so that the length is right.

    1. Yes... this logic helps explain why I have, like, two-dozen pairs of jeans, right? hehe

  9. How about a short wrap dress or a colorful maxi dress?

    1. Oooh! I have a wrap dress I haven't worn in ages AND a few maxi dresses hanging out in my closet....

  11. You look confident, pretty and comfortable... the 3 most important things when choosing any outfit. Confidence comes first, though, pretty and comfortable are just added bonuses. :)

    1. Why thank you! I usually think: color, comfort, confidence... That's what attracts me to clothes anyway! Once I put them on, comfort becomes more important.

  12. First off, that's an awesome outfit. I love the top :)I have a similar fashion sense. I love jeans, flats, and solid color top. To push me out of my rut, I have a few "go to" A line, just- below-the-knee length skirts. It's feminine and light for warmer days but still very comfort oriented.

    1. Nice suggestion - I'm a little low on skirts, but might be able to dig up a few!

  13. Kjerstin: Love the top! I'd like to see you in a knee-length dress -- perhaps the Bohemian pattern/colors that are popular now (I have a 12-year old going on 16), with a nice cut blazer. I, too, have the middle/lower body issue, but this works for me (with 2" heels or your fav white ones.

  14. Gay - thanks for these suggestions. I've decided to spend some time this weekend doing a closet overhaul ... time to revisit my lesser-worn-but-still-fabulous items, and purge whatever isn't doing it for me anymore. I'm not sure if I have a blazer that fits and works for warmer weather. Might have to put this on my wish list!

  15. Love the colours on you. The shirt is cut a little oddly for your frame. The ruching hit at the wrong place. You might look at things that are tighter just under the bust (empire waist for example) and then looser at the hips. That way you accentuate your top curves and highlights your natural waist.
On the plus side, I LOVE the sleeves and neckline on you.
Consider a bulkier or brighter necklace for a solid colour shirt, especially when sweater matches jeans.

    1. Anon,
Yes, the cut of the shirt surprised me when I saw it photographed.. it looked different in the mirror. I won't be getting rid of it (love the color too much!) but good to know!

Oddly - I don't really have any bulky or bright necklaces. I'm a novice when it comes to jewelry! I'll have to keep a lookout for some good pieces to add....

  16. If you ever watched the show "Gilmore Girls" you might have seen the wrap dresses Lorelai wore a lot, especially in the later seasons. Those would look great on you. I do think that you chose well with doing the dak solid color on the bottom and the bright color at the top.

    1. I never really got in to the Gilmore Girls show, but I googled the wrap dress and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I have one wrap dress, but it has cap sleeves instead of the longer sleeves, which makes it a smudge less flattering than the ones from the show... yet another thing to add to my wish list!

  17. This is really fun, and giving me GREAT tips too as (based on your stats from a previous post we're very similar in size) and coloring. I agree with the previous comment that the top is not the best cut for you, and I'm ready to learn about jewelry too. I too go for dark denim on the bottom, but yesterday I tried on bright denim (29.50 in the junior department at Macy's Celebrity something was the brand) and loved it just couldn't pick a color so I'm still thinking since I don't know what I'd wear on top. Also, I agree wrap dresses are wonderful- I LOVE them, also wrap style tops.

I LOVE your hair! It's grown out from your hair coloring incident beautifully! Very flattering and swingy! Love it!!

  20. One of the advantages of applying for an auto credit online is that the auto advance application takes no time at all to wrap up. Though you would need to drive to the bank and after that the dealership to round out the printed material required with applying for a credit, you won't need to go out to round out an online vehicle advance application. cash advance chicago
